Hamden Parks and Recreation * Summer Camp
March 2013. Age of camper: 5 (this will be her third summer, so she started when she was 3)
Pros: Held at Shepherd Glen school (for this age group) which has tons of outdoor play space, huge fields, a lot of shade and is in a quiet residential neighborhood; counselors are mostly college kids, which to me gives it a feel of summer camp and differentiates it from daycare/school—there are adults there too, but at pickup/drop-off you’re dealing with college kids and they do seem to come back year after year, which tells you something; good combination of indoor arts-and-crafts and outdoor running around; when you pickup/drop-off you just pull into the circular drive and they take or deliver your kid to you (this is seriously the best part ;-) ); definitely the most affordable camp around; offers before and after camp care (camp is 8:30-3); a few field trips to break things up, which the kids love
Cons: Swimming lessons don’t begin until they’re going into 2nd grade—I wish it was earlier, like just about every other camp it only runs from beginning of July through the first week of August—I wish it went further into August.
My daughter loves this camp. I’ve offered to let her try other camps and she says she wants to go back to this one. She’s made friends and met counselors who come back each year, so you can tell they like it!! Jennifer S.
