July 2011.  5 Things that Make the Foote School Great…

1.      Strong academic program begins in Kindergarten: reading, writing, math, science, foreign language, and each Foote student has music, drama, art and physical education every year.

2.      Experienced teachers for small classes nurture students, get to know them and their families well; families supported through Afterschool and Vacation programs.

3.      Hands-on project-based learning ensures joyous, active, and balanced environment, reflecting Foote’s motto ‘Gladly will I learn and gladly teach.’

4.      Strongly diverse community; $1.4 million dollars of need-based financial aid.

5.      47,000 volume library staffed by three full-time librarians; technology program supports current research and publishing activities.

October 2011.  Our experiences with the Foote School have been overwhelmingly positive.  We have two children at Foote and both started Foote in the 5th grade.  We love our local public elementary school so decided to apply to Foote when our children were ready to move on to middle school.  The transition for both our son and our daughter was seamless.  The administration, faculty and students all welcomed our children and within a week or two, they were integral parts of the Foote community.

Highlights of our Foote experience include the quality of the teaching programs, the outstanding faculty, the positive learning environment, an absolutely wonderful arts and theater program, and an excellent science curriculum.  The Foote concept of integrating given lessons into all aspects of the day is well-developed and successful. For example, when sixth graders are studying the geography and cultures of the world in Humanities class, they are also learning about those cultures in art class, in computer lab and in music class.  This makes the overall learning experience more complete.  We look forward to the completion this Spring of a new center on campus dedicated to science and technology.

We are confident that Foote School is providing our children with the skills and confidence to succeed in high school and beyond.

September 2011.  We chose Foote School initially because our town did not offer full-day kindergarten, and we knew of Foote’s good reputation from other families. We stayed because each of our three children was thoroughly engaged and excited by the learning process from the first day. From then on, they loved going to school.

As a parent, you quickly realize how thoroughly professional, experienced, dedicated, and unbelievably creative the classroom teachers are, but you realize only later that the other teachers–for example, the PE teachers, arts teachers, and librarians–are amazing too.

If there are cons to the Foote experience, I would say that some kids might feel that after several years the school may seem small (each grade has about 50 students). But that hasn’t been my kids’ experience. They like the level of comfort they have at a school where they know everyone. (The mixed-age class in grades 1&2 and the “buddy” program of older kids mentoring younger ones are some of the ways kids get to know students in other grades.)

Our oldest went all the way through 9th grade at Foote (the other two are still at Foote) and had an extraordinary 9th grade experience that I don’t think other schools offer. In addition to developing friendships he’ll have for life, our son stretched and grew from high academic expectations and positive risks, like having to perform in a play and crossing cultural boundaries through Foote’s sister school in China and the 9th grade China trip.
