Off Book, classes for kids by Yale Children’s Theatre

Submitted by Nicole

Who we are: Off Book is the new name for the same program we have offered for years! It is an 8-week drama class that is provided free of charge to all families in and around New Haven for kids in grades 3-5.  The program is designed to introduce kids to the basics of acting and, most importantly, to feel confident and comfortable performing and expressing themselves.  We also play games and provide delicious snacks!  In the final few sessions, the kids work together to write, practice, and perform their own short play for their parents.  This class is a joy to teach and the kids are sure to have a blast!  It would be amazing if you would join us in the fun! Help Common Ground Win a Teaching Kitchen

Common Ground (www.commongroundct.orgis a finalist to win an AWESOME TEACHING KITCHEN from Ikea - a $10,000 makeover to our farmhouse classroom that will allow us to do much more learning, cooking, and eating with kids!  A teaching kitchen in the farmhouse would mean that we can make salad, bake bread, invent salsa recipes, scramble up eggs, and make pizzas whenever we want to.  Right now our cooking programs are limited to the times that we can access the high school kitchen – sometimes challenging as our school chefs work hard to feed 200 people per day and process and preserve all the food from our farm. Our whole community would benefit from a teaching kitchen: our high school students who can learn new culinary skills, adults who come for cooking and food preservation workshops, and young children in after school and summer camp programs who cook with and try new foods!

Ikea will decide who wins the $10,000 makeover based on the number of votes texted in by the community from January 6th through January 20th.  You can text once per day, and every vote counts!  We need YOU to text every day from now through January 20th!

Text LIFE35 to 62345 today and every day until January 20th!   Send your text now!
As far as I can tell, this does NOT sign you up for any spam texts from Ikea.  You’ll get a texted response confirming your vote and offering an opportunity to receive promotions from Ikea by text, but you can just ignore the offer if you are not interested.Tell your friends and family!  Put it on Facebook!  We need your help!
Crossing our fingers,
Common Ground

Another Play in a Day in New Haven

Submitted by Chris

Chris Arnott, a lifelong theater fan (and father of two theater-loving daughters), helps a room full of kids create their own version of a famous play. The play is chosen, planned, rehearsed and performed in a single afternoon.

This will be the eleventh Play in a Day show. It’s happening Friday, Jan. 6 ( the Three Kings Day school holiday) from 2-5 p.m. at Neverending Books, 810 State Street, New Haven.

Parents can drop off their kids at Neverending Books at 2 p.m., then return three hours later to see the show and, if they like, stick around for pizza and chat. The fee is $5 per child.

Parents are also welcome to stay if they wish. Children of all ages welcome. (In previous shows, kids as young as four and as old as 13 have participated).

Many of the previous Play in a Day shows can be viewed at http://scribblers.us/nhtj/?page_id=1500
