February Vacation Programs at Common Ground in New Haven

Common Ground offers educational, active environmental programs
for children ages 6-12
during the New Haven Public School February and April Vacations
Maple Madness: Monday, Feb 15, 9:00 am – 2:00 pm; Extended day option from 2:00 – 4:00
February and March are maple syruping season! Enjoy a morning sap to syrup tour at Common Ground, taste sap from the tree, and participate in a maple syrup taste test! Later, board a yellow bus and come with us on a field trip to a CT sugarshack to see how the big producers make real maple syrup.
Program fee: $50/child; $10 – $15 fee for optional extended day.
Snow Adventures: Tuesday, Feb 16, 9:00 – 2:00; Extended day option from 2:00 – 4:00
Join us for a day of fun and adventure in the winter woods. We will learn about animal tracks and other wildlife signs and go for a hike to test our new skills. We will also go sledding, build snow forts, or take part in other winter activities depending on the weather.
Program fee: $50/child; $10 – $15 fee for optional extended day.
Recycled Art Fair: Wednesday, Feb 17, 9:00 – 2:00; Extended day option from 2:00 – 4:00
Bring your creative and crazy ideas for a day of recycled arts and crafts. All new projects made with all old, recycled, reclaimed, or reused materials! Make a tin can lantern, a personalized journal, and more! Express your creative side while learning a bit about the trash-to-treasure cycle and why recycling is an important part of sustainable living.
Program fee: $50/child; $10 – $15 fee for optional extended day.
Adventures in Cooking, part 1: Thursday, Feb 18, 9:00 – 2:00; Extended day option from 2:00 – 4:00
What does food have to do with the environment? Play games and participate in activities that demonstrate how organic farms and locally grown food benefit the environment. Have you ever had chocolate beet cake, spicy sautéed brussel sprouts, or sweet potato muffins? We will cook and taste many kinds of local vegetables, and will end the day with a sampling session. Take home recipes for your new favorite veggies!
Program fee: $50/child; $10 – $15 fee for optional extended day.
Adventures in Cooking, part 2: Friday, Feb 19, 9:00 – 2:00; Extended day option from 2:00 – 4:00
Come play with your food! Today we will learn to make nutritious, fun snacks from foods that grow in Connecticut and beyond. Have you ever made a dinosaur zucchini, a radish rose, or a pita pizza face? Join us for pet vegetables and silly food sculptures you can make and eat.
Program fee: $50/child; $10 – $15 fee for optional extended day.
Extended Day Care for all Vacation Programs Pick-up time for all vacation programs is 2:00. Extended Day Care is available from 2:00 – 4:00 (pick-up anytime after 2:00). Extended Day activities are supervised recreation including art projects, board games, and outside playtime. Age-appropriate movies will be an option if it is too cold or wet to be outside. Children are welcome to bring a favorite book or game, and may wish to bring a snack. Extended Day fee: $10 per day if pre-registered and pre-paid, or $15 to add extended day care on the day of the program.

Program notes:
- Children must bring their own bagged lunch each day
- Programs take place both indoors and outdoors in all weather, so children must be dressed accordingly
- Space is limited to 48 children per program. Registrations accepted until each program is full
- Payment must be received in full for your place to be reserved.
