mostly-Green Halloween, part four

I’m conflicted.

As a kid, Halloween was as much about the costume as it was the candy.  As a mom, Halloween is about all the traditions we create together as a family, including the costume and the candy.

Since M is still young, Halloween for her is what we make Halloween out to be.  I said it once, and I’ll say it again, this is the year that I feel like I need to really consider what Halloween will look and feel like around our house.  It seems however much we decide to do, we’re setting a standard now.  Actually, that’s really where the “mostly-Green” idea came from in the first place.  This year is kind of like our dress rehearsal before M really has an opinion about Halloween and “mostly-Green” seemed attainable for us as a family. Until now.  What the heck do we do about the candy?

Since I’ve spent some time sharing my mostly-Green Halloween ideas with you, now I’d like love to hear your take.   I’ll be honest, Halloween candy is not something I’ve ever really questioned.  In years past, I handed out mini-Snickers without thinking twice.  But as you’ve noticed, I’m making an effort to ‘green’ our Halloween, if only a little at a time.   The candy-thing only just hit me a couple of days ago, and so far, I’ve got nothing…well…except a few candy-wrapper art ideas, but more on that next week.

So, what do you do about the candy?  An inquiring mind really wants to know.

We give out little containers of play doh that are in festive halloween colors. We do have some candy (mostly chocolate) in case we run out.

I guess the play doh is not really green… but it’s not candy!

Oh! You just gave me a great idea, Amy! Playdough CAN be green…if you make it from scratch, which is super easy to do. A friend shared her recipe with me and we’ve only ever made our own playdough ever since. Wrap a ball in waxpaper with a printed copy of the recipe tied to the top–sounds like a great, green, Halloween candy-alternative to me! Now I wonder if i can pull this off…

  4. I struggle with this. The last two years I have given out pencils and stickers and some little trinky crap that I found- stampers, bubble rings… I have been thinking more about the trinky stuff, I don’t want that in my house so why give it out. I love finding pencils on clearence throughout the year and giving those out as they are useful. i also found organic fruit juice suckers this year for a give away.

After I posted my email, I thought about making the play doh from scratch but couldn’t think of a way to get around the disposable plastic tub. Wax paper is a great idea! I think next year I’ll be able to tackle it!

Halloween tattoos and Halloween pencils in this house – I thin I need to get something else that is a little more “big kid” friendly……can I give them cans of Red Bull? This is my first year trying this, but last year I gain 5 lbs. from candy!!

  7. i think its fine to give out just some miniture candy bars to the kids cause its a special occasion and only comes once a year. And just let them take a little chocolate bar or some mnms in a bag in their lunch or after dinner treat and thats perfectly fine. I mean its dumb to hand out strawberrys and bananas i mean cmon their only young for a little so let them enjoy it.
