Inkblot Painting

One day while we were finger-painting, M squirted a huge glob of paint on the paper…and before I knew it, another big glob!  While the initial reaction inside my head was, “Stop it!  Enough!,” the reaction that came out my mouth was, “Ooooo, I have idea!”  I looked at M and said, “Let’s fold this in half.”

So we folded it in half, pressed the two sides together, opened it super-carefully and honest to goodness truth, this is what we got.  M’s face lit up and shouted, “A BUTTERFLY!”  Could it be more perfect?  I was imagining we’d open M’s globs of paint to reveal a bizarre Rorschach blot and M would look at me and wonder why smooshing her perfectly good globs of paint was such a good idea in the first place.  Talk about one lucky Mommy!  The art-Gods were on my side that day, and I am eternally grateful :0)

162-6249_IMGOf course, M had to make another.  She called this one, “Frog the Frog.”

162-6208_IMGI made the executive decision to stop after blot number three.  Um, can you say “Rorschach?”  It’s a stretch, but I called this one “Jaguar” (since all I got from M was a long, dramatic pause).  I figured we’d better stop while we were ahead!

162-6210_IMGI highly recommend getting out some gloppy paint, some paper and some imagination.  Watercolors might work, too (let me know if they do).  It’s as fun to see what symmetrical creation your kiddo comes up with as it is to see the look on their face when they reveal it!
