Weekend Day Hikes (updated)

I don’t know about you, but today’s perfectly blissful weather makes me crave a walk in the woods.  Although Saturday looks stormy, if I plan it right on Sunday I might just be able to sneak in a family hike this weekend.  Here’s a shortlist of family-friendly spots I’m pondering:

-Do the Loop-hike up Soapstone Mountain at Collis P. Huntington State Park in Redding (Fairfield County)

-Discover fairy homes along the Green Trail at Hartman Park in Lyme (New London County)

-Hike then swim at Day Pond State Park in Colchester (New London County)

-Hike until we find the beach Start at the model airplane runway.  Do nature center and trail next.  End at the beach at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport (Fairfield County)

If you’re tempted to get the family outside, too, visit No Child Left Inside for links to these and all other CT state parks, forests and waterways.

…and listen to this delightful suggestion from a kidHaven reader:

"Want a short, flat hike that is perfect for toddlers who
usually beg to be carried after a block? If you start at the covered
bridge at the Eli Whitney museum and continue around (through hidden
areas of East Rock park), it circles around over a couple of other
bridges (one which is simply gorgeous) and lets you out right on
Whitney, not 1/2 a block from the museum. We go with our 2 year old
just about every other weekend. It's maybe 3/4 of a mile, and my
eager-to-be-held little guy never asks to be carried. You can also
expand the route if you would like."

Can I also add a short, flat hike that is perfect for toddlers who usually beg to be carried after a block? If you start at the covered bridge at the Eli Whitney museum and continue around (through hidden areas of East Rock park), it circles around over a couple of other bridges (one which is simply gorgeous) and lets you out right on Whitney, not 1/2 a block from the museum. We go with our 2 year old just about every other weekend. It’s maybe 3/4 of a mile, and my eager-to-be-held little guy never asks to be carried. You can also expand the route if you would like.

This sounds delightful, consider this added to the list! I’m actually going to insert your really great recommendation into the original post. It’s because of wonderful readers like you that makes kidHaven better by the day :0) Happy hiking!
